Mrs. Anna Eliza Steffey died about 6 p.m. Thursday at the home of her son, A. K. Steffey, in Birds, Says the Lawrence County News. She was 83 years, 8 months and 24 days old at the time of her death which was caused by infirmities incident to old age.

"A Happy Day
At the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jno Steffey, in Lawrence county, Ills., a host of friends gathered to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of his marriage to Miss Ann E., daughter of the late David Wampler, which took place May 11, 1848. The grandmother was there in a feeble state of health. Aunts, uncles, and cousins were there by the score. Uncle George and aunt Polly Wampler, also his brother Felix and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Whitson, Mrs. Sarah Steen and Mrs. Trim Robinson of Wheatland, were there in their usual jolly way. Two of her sisters were present, Miss R. Wampler and Mrs A. Whitson. All thier children were present except Reece, who is in Chicago..."
Deceased maiden name was Ann Eliza Wampler and she was born April 27, 1831 in Wythe County, Virginia, removing with her parents in 1836 to Knox County, Indiana. On May 11, 1848, she was married to John Steffy and they moved to Lawrence County in 1861 making their home about a mile each of Birds. Her husband preceded to her better land April 15, 1908 at the ripe age of 96 years.
She was the mother of eleven children, ten sons and one daughter, nine of whom survive, namely M.H., R.S., A.K., A.M., J.B., J.E., and H. K. Steffey of Bond; D.R. and H.C. Steffey of Chicago, all of whom were present at the funeral. She also leaves forty grandchildren and forty-one great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Steffey joined the Presbyterian church while a resident of Knox county, but upon her removal to Lawrence county she transferred her membership to the St Paul M. P. Church of which she remained a faithful member until death.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul church, four miles east of Birds, Rev. Darnell officiating; interment in St. Paul cemetery."
