Rhythm and Blues Musician. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, he is best known as the bass soloist on Ben E. King's 1961 hit recording, "Stand By Me." Trotman's bass solo, which opened and anchored that song, is considered by many to be one of the most recognizable of all time. In a career spanning almost seven decades Trotman worked with Duke Ellington, Ivory Joe Hunter, the Coasters, the Drifters, Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, and Billie Holiday. He was also an accomplished studio musician of both rhythm and blues and rock and roll. He died of pneumonia in Long Island, New York.
