The following was written by Judy (Houston) Avers to honor our mother, Theo Ellen Houston in honor of being installed in the "Halls of Ivy" on September 5, 1998 at Wichita State University. A brick was also honored from Judy.

We celebrate the life of our mother, Theo Ellen Houston. Mother was born in Hutchinson, Kansas to Verna Sarah (Diehl) and Earl Hicks King. Her parents were young and World War I intevened into their lives. In 1916, her mother, now divorced arranged for foster care and finally the adoption of her child to the Roy C. Grider family of Hutchinson, Kansas on 5th of July 1916. A difficult childhood followed in an unhappy and later broken home.

At 17, mother fell in love and married John Kenneth Houston of Hutchinson, Kansas. For many years a full and happy life as a military wife and mother of three followed. In 1954 this life fell apart with the death of Kenneth.

A lifetime desire for education and a need of financial support to raise her family, led mother to obtain her G.E.D. and attend Hutchinson Junior College. However, the pressure of school, work and finances stopped her from continuing towards a four-year degree. She then entered and completed a program study as a cosmetologist. Mother supported and influenced her family with her hard work, and always stressed education as a key to personal satisfaction and independence.

We lost mother to breast cancer. As bravely and independently as she had faced every other obstacle in her life she fought for five years in the battle of this disease. Without complaints or regrets she always moved forward.
With love, John Arnold, Judith Ann and Kenneth David.

Theo Ellen Houston, finally met her BIRTH FATHER, Earl Hicks King and his wife Minerva. Her father's brother, Fred King, contacted her to make arrangements for her to meet her birth father, Earl Hicks King. Theo never met her mother.

She was adopted by The Grider's on July 5, 1916. Theo Ellen King Grider was only..,1 year 8 months and 9 days old at the time of her adoption
