JANESVILLE, Wis. - Robert (Bob) U. Steinmetz, 86, of Janesville, Wis., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at Mercy Hospital.
He was born in Vernon County, Wis., on Feb. 27, 1921, to Samuel I. and Vernie M. (Krause) Steinmetz. Bob married Zona P. Johnson Aug. 3, 1942. He married Arlein (Klitzke) Zanton June 25, 1995.
He retired from Wisconsin Power and Light in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the VFW, sang with the Ramblers, played euchre and cribbage at the Senior Center and enjoyed walking and dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Arlein of Janesville, Wis.; five daughters, Karen (James) Reid of Racine, Wis., Verna Jane (Harley) Janisch of Janesville, Wis., Christine (Scott) Horne of Springfield, Dr. Judy Johnson of Chicago and Maxine Steinmetz of Janesville, Wis.; stepdaughter, Jeanne (Joseph) McDermitt of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Zona; three brothers, Max, Dale and Paul; a sister, Hilda Walls; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, 1010 N. Wright Road, Janesville, Wis., and on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Ave. in Janesville, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. James Melvin officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park with military rites by Kienow-Hilt VFW Post 1621.
