Douglas Shoe Company, which grew into 70 retail stores across the country. He entered politics in 1884, serving as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1887 and was elected Mayor of Brockton, in 1890. He served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1884, 1892, 1896 and 1904. In November 1904, he was elected the 42nd Governor of Massachusetts and served until he retired in 1906.
