42nd Massachusetts Governor. During the Civil War, he served in the 58th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor. In peacetime he established the W.L. Douglas Shoe Company, which grew into 70 retail stores across the country. He entered politics in 1884, serving as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1887 and was elected Mayor of Brockton, in 1890. He served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1884, 1892, 1896 and 1904. In November 1904, he was elected the 42nd Governor of Massachusetts and served until he retired in 1906.
