Alex Balla, who often went by the Hungarian nickname "Elek," was the first born child of Hungarian émigrés, Alexander Balla (1886-1950) and Julia Molnar (1885-1962). He was the beloved older brother of Ima (Balla) Creech, the twins Frank and John (who both died young), Irene (Balla) Sebok, Esther (Balla) Sacchelli, Arpod Balla, Henry Balla, Aline (Balla) Goetz, and Ethel (Balla) Elmer. To them he was "Soni."

Alex spent about the first seven years of his life in New York, living in Brooklyn, Rochester, and LeRoy. By 1915, he moved with his parents to Sabine Co., Texas, which is where he spent most of his early life.

By 1930, Alex and his family had moved to the nearby county of Jasper. It was in Jasper County that he married Edith Flowers (1916-2004), the daughter of William Hardy Flowers (1866-1928) and Celestine "Tennie" Bankston (1869-1939), on the 24 December 1934. After their marriage, Alex and Edith lived in Hardin Co., Texas, and had four children there between 1936 and 1954: Shirley, Alex, Terry, and Edith.

Alex passed away on the 3 June 1977 in Beaumont, Jefferson Co., Texas. He was buried in Old Hardin Cemetery. His wife, Edith, followed him in death twenty-seven years later. She is buried beside him in Old Hardin Cemetery.
