Rev. Raphael Gilbert was the son of Jonathan and Eunice Hurlburt Gilbert. He was the husband of Amelia (Risley) Gilbert. Amelia died January 31, 1891. Rev. Gilbert was a minister in the New York East Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He entered the ministry in 1827 and served for thirty-six years. He was the first minister stationed at Brooklyn: York Street M. E. Church after the separation from Brooklyn: Sand Street M. E. Church. He was there from 1835 through 1837.
