Born in Valencia, he studied at the Academy of San Carlos and received a scholarship at the prestigious Academia Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. After working for King Carlos IV, he was called to the court of King Ferdinand VII and shortly thereafter succeeded Goya as Royal Court Painter. López was best known for his portraits, particularly the likeness of Goya which is exhibited in the Museo del Prado. During his long career he painted nearly every notable person in Spain during the first half of the 1800s. His many works include "Los Reyes Católicos recibiendo una embajada del Rey de Fez," "El rey Ezequías haciendo ostentación de sus riquezas" and "La infanta Luisa Carlota de Borbón."
