Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first as a Captain with the 1st Illinois Light Artillery, then as Colonel and commander of the 59th United States Colored Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers in February 28, 1865 in recognition of his war-time services.
