U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Middlebury College, in 1826, taught school (1826-31), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Rutland, Vermont. He was a member Vermont State House of Representatives, (1833, 36-38) and prosecuting attorney of Rutland County, (1836-42). In 1843, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1847. After his term, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate in 1850 and served until his death at age 63.
