Anthony P. Miller, one of the pioneer residents of Elk County; who died at his home in Portland Mills, was laid to rest in the Thayer Memorial Cemetery in Ridgway, Elk Co., Pennsylvania, Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted at his home by Rev. John Banks. Mr. Miller was born in Strattanville, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania, May 24, 1849. He had resided in this county for nearly half a century and could tell incidents in connection with the community's growth. He was one of the selected speakers at the Centennial Celebration in Ridgway last July and his discourse carried his hearers back to the days when Pennsylvania was covered with dense virgin forests and with the choicest white pine, hemlock and hardwood. The woods abounded in big game, particularly deer and elk, from which the county derived its name. Mr. Miller first came to this section when only twelve years of age. He carried the mail between Ridgway and Brookville and back on horseback, making one trip a day and returning the next day on a trail through the woods--a trail few cared to travel in the Civil War days. He followed the lumber industry until a few years ago when he retired from active work. HE WAS A GREAT READER AND LOVER OF NATURE. He took pride in his garden and flowers surrounding his home. He is survived by his widow and six children: Benjamin E., of Centralia, Lewis County, Washington; HARRY A. MILLER, CITY CLERK OF JOHNSONBURG; Charles E., of this place; William, Clyde and Archie, at home; Mrs. Gertrude Painter, of Salamanca, Cattaraugus Co., New York; Mrs. Catherine Thompson, of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois; a brother Jacob of Roanoke, Bedford Co., Virginia, and eleven grandchildren survive.
