JAMES S. BRADBURY CALLED TO HIS FINAL HOME
James Strode Bradbury, one of the best known residents of the San Juan Ridge, and proprietor of the National Hotel and stables at North San Juan, died yesterday between 12 and 1 o’clock p.m., after an illness that extended over several months. Mr. Brad bury sought medical aid at Sacramento, Oakland and other places, but nothing could be done for him and he returned to his home several weeks ago to spend the remainder of his days. In the passing of James Bradbury one of the best men in the whole upper country had gone to his eternal home.
Deceased was born in Illinois and at the time of his death was aged about 62 years. He came to California with his parents when very young, the family settling in Alleghany, where the elder Bradbury engaged in the butchering business for many years. After attending school and growing up to manhood James Bradbury took up the teaming business and for many years was one of the best known freighters in the mountains.
Several years ago decedent purchased the National hotel at North San Juan from the late John Gorman and conducted it right up to the time of his death. The hostelry had always been popular with the traveling public and the hospitality of Landlord Bradbury was a by word with all who have been guests at the hotel. Some years ago he also purchased the German stables and until a short time ago conducted the stage and mail line between North San Juan and Columbia Hill.
As honest as the day is long, always following the motto of doing unto others as you would have done to you, Mr. Bradbury earned a reputation that will remain fresh in the memory of all who enjoyed his acquaintance. He gave close attention to his business and always manifested and interest in the welfare of that favored section of Nevada county. Many a friend will miss the genial presence of “Jim” Bradbury.
Deceased is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons, as follows: Mrs. Mark McCullough, Misses Mabel, Vera and Neva Bradbury, William and Frank Bradbury, all of North San Juan. He also leaves four brothers and a sister, namely; H. M. Bradbury of Forest City; Thomas Theodore and Ernest Bradbury of Alleghany, and Mrs. Annie Bearsford of Oakland, the latter being at his bedside when the end came.
The funeral arrangements will be completed today.
