He made his major league debut on April 17, 1934 and appeared in his final major league game on September 20, 1945. In 1937 he was selected as an American League All-Star representative, and was considered one of the greatest fielders of his era. He established major league records for double plays and assists during the 1937 season that remained unbroken for nearly three and a half decades. The following year he became the first third baseman in major league history to hit 30 or more home runs in a single season. He scored 100 or more runs during seven of his 12 major league seasons, and was walked 100 times or more during six seasons. He appeared in 1,582 games during his major league career, finishing with 1,558 hits, 178 home runs and a career .272 batting average. In 1977 he was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame.
