Matthew Dickey was the son of James and Jane (Boyd) Dickey. He immigrated to America from Londonderry in Northern Ireland. He was the husband of Elizabeth Ann (Templeton) Dickey. They were married about 1819. Elizabeth died January 29, 1888.

In 1828, the Associate Presbyterian (Seceder) Church of Jefferson County, was organized in the Irish Settlement of Clover Township (north of Dowlingville) - on the list of founders were the names of Matthew and Elizabeth Dickey - in 1888, this church was known as the United Presbyterian Church. In 1843 Matthew was elected school director.
