Joanna Johnson Warden, 82, of Columbus, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Services were Jan. 9 at Main Street Presbyterian Church in Columbus with the Rev. Jim Danner officiating.
Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery. Gunter and Peel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Warden received a bachelor of science degree in secretarial science from Mississippi State College For Women, now Mississippi University for Women. After graduating, she taught at Lee High School. She later worked at Maxwell Air Force Base where she met her husband, Col. Henry E. "Pete" Warden. They lived in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Alexandria, Va., and Los Angeles, Ca. and after retirement moved to Columbus. After returning to Columbus she completed a Masters of Education degree from Mississippi University For Women. She and her husband founded the Warden Carden School where she worked as both a teacher and the director of the school for over 20 years. She considered her work at Warden Carden to be a ministry and therefore she never accepted a salary.
Mrs. Warden was a member of Main Street Presbyterian Church and was active in many organizations including the Stephen D. Lee Home, The Society for Preservation of Antiquities, The Pioneer Society, the Col. Dames, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Columbus Lowndes Historical Society, the Colombians, and the Rose Club.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Col. H.E. "Pete" Warden; two sons, Henry Edward "Hank" Warden, Jr. of Columbus and William Abernathy "Billy" Warden of Madison; a daughter, Joanna Warden Posey of Madison; three grandchildren; and a niece.
