Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. With the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, he enlisted in the US Military and served as a Private in Company H, 21st Infantry, US Army. In actions at Santiago, Cuba, on July 1, 1898, Private DeSwan under heavy fire from the enemy, assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines. For gallantly in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 22, 1899. Remaining the Army, he later achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
