Monarch of Westphalia and Imperial Prince of France . Last of twelve children of General Charles Maria Buonaparte, as well as Napoleon's brother. In 1800 he embarked on a military career by enlisting in the French Navy where he carried out several important missions and soon reaching the highest ranks of Officer especially thanks to the nepotistic policy of his older brother who in the meantime became Emperor of the French. Immediately after his appointment as Rear Admiral (1806), as a result of an arranged marriage (1807) with the daughter of the King of Württemberg, he ascended the throne of Westphalia. Resigned from the Navy and joned the army with the rank of General of Division, he had no particular command ability during the battles sustained in support of the French armies. After the definitive defeat of Napoleon (1813) he abandoned all his assignments moving in Württemberg, and assuming, at the behest of his father-in-law, the title of Duke of Monfort. Between 1816 and 1848, Jerome Bonaparte was forced for political reasons to move to various cities including Wien, Trieste and Rome. Nonetheless, returning to Paris (1848), with the arrival of his nephew Napoleon III in power, he was appointed Marshal of France (1850), President of the Senate (1851) and reinstated in all his noble titles (1852).
