Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Governor of Vermont. Graduated Dartmouth College, 1857. Studied law, admitted to bar, 1859. Practiced in Hartford. Town Clerk for over 34 years. At beginning of Civil War assisted in recruiting a company, which he joined as first lieutenant. Captain, August, 1861. Disabled by wounds, convalesced in Philadelphia. Returned to regiment, promoted to major, September 27, 1862. Lieutenant Colonel, January 15, 1863. Took part in Wilderness Campaign. Took command of Second Vermont Regiment when all field officers of that organization were killed or wounded. Discharged, July 27, 1864. Returned to law practice. President, Reunion Society of Vermont Officers. Windsor County State's Attorney, 1867-68. Delegate, Republican national convention, 1868. Married Lydia M. Steele of Stanstead, Quebec, Canada, September 15, 1869. Lieutenant Governor, 1882-84. Governor, 1884-86. Chairman, state Railway Commission. Trustee, Hartford Library. In 1891 received Medal of Honor for heroism at Lee's Mills as Commander of Company F, Third Vermont Regiment on April 16, 1862.
