DEATH OF MRS. JOHN T. SHEWMAKE: She Was A Resident Of Augusta And Was In Atlanta Visiting Her Son's Family, She was Only Sick A Few Days:
The death of Mrs. John T. Shewmake widow of Hon. John T. Shewmake, of Augusta was a great shock to family and friends. Mrs. Shewmake had been a greatly respected and honored resident of that city for many years.
Her native place is Burke county where she was born and reared. After her marriage with Hon. John T. Shewmake she continued to reside in Burke county and for a time in and near Waynesboro. "Cherry Hill" as it is still called just outside this place was once their residence where they lived many years ago. Her father, Henry P. Jones, was one of the first settlers of Burke county and the descendents of the family still occupy the old homestead and lands formerly owned by the largest land holders in the state, and one of the wealthiest citizens of Burke county as well as one of the highest in standing. The sons of this old citizen, brothers of Mrs. Shewmake, were men of the greatest prominence whose reputation were hardly confined to the state.
Hon. Joseph B. Jones, Jas. V. Jones, Esq., Hon Wm B. Jones, M. D., and Henry Jones were the four sons whom everybody who knew them delighted to honor. Mrs. Shewmake was a most dignified and elegant lady. Quiet, intelligent unobtrusive and matronly she fittingly illistrated the southern lady and matron; and with manners so gentle and refined the impression left upon her large family of children every one of whom deservedly receives the honor and respect of all. Her husband, a man as well known, Hon John T. Shewmake, died about four years ago, and she nows follows lamented by all. At the time of death she was nearly 70 years of age.
