After advanced schooling at Quantico Pollock was promoted to lieutenant colonel and assigned command of the Second Battalion, First Marine Division, in 1942; when on the night of August 21-22, 1942, Marines under his command were subjected to a surprise attack at the Tenaru River, Guadalcanal, he left the Command Post and directed operations from the front lines for the next 12 hours, resulting in the killing of 700 Japanese and earning him the Navy Cross. Pollock received the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" for the 1943 Cape Gloucester operation, was advanced to colonel in November of that year, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for action on Iwo Jima. Posted as Commanding Officer of the Basic School, a job often held by future generals, in November 1945 he later served at Headquarters Marine Corps and in July of 1949 was promoted to brigadier general. Pollock received his second star in October 1951 and became Commanding Officer, Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; he arrived in Korea to command the First Marine Division in August of 1952 and for his leadership in that position received the Army Distinguished Service Medal.
