81, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, internationally known authority on paper-making technology and wife of former Congressman George C. Wortley, died November 25 in Washington, DC, where they had been visiting their children. She was the first woman graduate of the College of Forestry, with a pulp and paper specialty. She was an honors Forestry graduate who also received a cum laude degree in chemistry from Syracuse University, both in 1948. She later served as a trustee of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and was also director emeritus of Syracuse Pulp and Paper Foundation. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Wortley did innovative research in paper-making techniques. She was senior technical manager for Allied Chemical in Solvay, later Allied Signal and then General Chemical. She traveled to Mexico, Brazil, Holland, France, Spain, Norway and Sweden to solve technical problems in paper mills. In 1992 she was honored by the Technical Associaton of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) for her meritorious service. Mrs. Wortley wrote more than 30 technical papers, contributed regularly to professional journals, organized seminars and was a member of TAPPI for more than 40 years. Born in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of Richard and Genevieve Dobie Hennessey and grew up in Most Holy Rosary parish. After her marriage she lived in Fayetteville, NY, for more than 33 years, where she was a member of Immaculate Conception parish. She was a past president of Zonta Club of Syracuse, an international professional women's organization; a former member of the CNY Epilepsy Foundation; and a former member of the New York State Women's Advisory Council. She was a Post-Standard Woman of Achievement for Science. She is survived by her husband, George C. Wortley, and their children, Dr. George C. (Susan) Wortley of Lynchburg, VA, Ann (Frank) Lavin of Washington, DC, and Elizabeth (John) Ring of Bethesda, MD; nine grandchildren, Erin (Joseph) Valliere, Michael and Andrew Wortley, Abigail, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Lavin, and Colleen, Katie and Jack Ring; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1, at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Chruch, Fort Lauderdale, FL, with calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Baird Case Jordan Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N.
