The Ridgway Record
1964
--Personalities of Our Time-- HARRY A MILLER
Harry A. Miller has served the Borough of Johnsonburg as Public Health Officer and Borough Council Secretary for a period of 44 years. He has the distinction of holding a public office longer than anyone else in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and received a citation from Genevieve Blatt, Secretary of Internal Affairs, for this honor last year. Mr. Miller was first appointed to the position on April 20, 1920, and has served continuously since that time. Today's personality is well known throughout Elk County due to his long term in public office but he is also known for his photography work and for his activities in the lumber business. A great number of the second generation will remember Harry Miller when he was behind the camera taking class pictures. The Borough Secretary is also very familiar with the lumber business in Elk County and can relate tale after tale of when lumbering was the "big" business. Mr. Miller spent his entire life working in one phase or another of the lumber business in Elk County. FOR 31 YEARS HE WAS CONNECTED WITH THE HYDE-MURPHY COMPANY OF RIDGWAY AS BOOKKEEPER, LUMBER BUYER AND ASSISTANT SECRETARY. The son of the late Anthony Padua Miller and Anna Charlotte Dickey, he was born in Vineyard Run, Elk County. He was married to the former Mary Emma Harter of Austin, Pa., on June 26, 1912. The Miller's are the proud parents of two daughters who reside in Johnsonburg--Mrs. Bertha (Arthur) Haight of Elk Avenue and Mrs. Eloise (Harold) Mortimer of Mary Street. He was a member of Company H, 16th Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard for six years. He graduated from the Portland Mills High School. He then went on to further his education at the Potts Shorthand and Business College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is a registered Republican. He is a member of the Johnsonburg Methodist Episcopal Church and is a Past Master of the James W. Brown Lodge, No. 675 Free and Accepted Masons - joined 1922. He is also a member of the Acacia Club of Johnsonburg and was a member of THE APOLLO GLEE CLUB. Mr. Miller, although retired from professional life, is very active in Borough affairs and is virtually a "walking encyclopedia" on the past and present business of the Borough of Johnsonburg. When a question arises at any of the town council meetings about something that happened in past years, Mr. Miller is always called on to give the answer. He always manages to come up with the correct answer and usually from memory. He has been known to name ordinances by number that have long been forgotten by anyone else. He has been an active hunter and fisherman all his life and manages to continue with these hobbies at the present time. He can recite tales of when game was plentiful in Elk County and the streams that were best suited for fishing. HIS SKILL IN HIS GARDEN IS BEYOND IMAGINATION. Whenever you visit the Harry Miller home on Second Avenue, the first place to look for the man of the house is in his garden. Mr. Miller's skill with a boat goes back a great number of years. He was a very active boatsman when very few people were indulging in the sport. His services were called on time and again during the days when floods were plentiful in Elk County. Mr. Miller and his boat were a common sight on the Clarion River in the old days. He spent hours on the water during the Flood of 1941, rescuing people from their homes where they were trapped. Mr. Miller has stated time and time again that he has no intentions of retiring to the "old rocking chair." He plans to remain active as long as God is willing.
