Monarch of France. Younger brother of Louis XVI, he ascended the throne after a long exile in Russia, Prussia and the United Kingdom, and following the death in captivity and at a young age, of his nephew Louis Charles of Bourbon. He is known as the King of the Restoration of the French monarchy thanks to the decisions of the victorious nations of the wars against Napoleon Bonaparte and his abdication (1814). However, when Napoleon attempted to seize power by fleeing from Elba island, he was forced to abandon Paris (1815, March). Only after the defeat of the Bonapartist armies in Waterloo (1815, June), he was definitively confirmed king of France. Louis XVIII died of complications from obesity.
