US Congressman, Senator. Born in Minden, Nebraska, he graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1927, was a teacher for a while, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1930 and commenced to practice in Minden, Nebraska. He was the Kearney County Attorney, (1931-34). In 1939, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1954. That same year he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate serving, (1955-79). Following his political career, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he practiced law and served as an officer of the conservative lobby the American Freedom Coalition. He died at age 94.
