U.S. Senator. He studied law in Carrollton, Ohio, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and was prosecuting attorney of Carroll County, (1848-50). Moving to Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1856, he practiced law and established the Leavenworth Daily Times. He was a member of the Territorial council, (1857-58), appointed US Attorney for the district of Kansas by President Abraham Lincoln, (1861-64), Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court (1864-67) and manager of the First National Bank of Leavenworth. In 1873, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alexander Caldwell, serving until 1874. Not a candidate for election, he was district judge of the first judicial district of Kansas, (1876-92) and a member of the board of directors of the Kansas Historical Society, (1886-89).
