Inez Hill was known to everyone around town as "Mama Hill," and was one of the "H's" in the famed H&H Restaurant on Forsyth Street in downtown Macon. The restaurant was reknowned for its home-cooked soul food cooking and was a favorite hang-out for the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Wet Willie . Mama Hill was co-owner of the restaurant with her goddaughter/cousin, "Mama Louise" Hudson. The ladies cooked for the Allman Brothers Band back in the early 1970s when they were first getting their start. Mama Louise and Mama Hill were so close that everyone considered them mother and daughter. The restaurant and Mama Hill are part of what makes Macon the well-loved place that it has become. The resturaunt opened in 1959 and was one of the featured stops for Oprah Winfrey during the talk show host's tour of Macon in November, 2007 and Mama Hill and Mama Louise were featured during one of the show's episodes. Mama Hill was born in Warrenton and moved to Macon in 1950 when her husband Paul took on a job at Robins Air Force Base. Mrs. Hill was born in Mitchell, Georgia to the parents of the late Rufus and Carrie Brooks. She was a devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church for approximately sixty years, giving of her time, steadfast dedication and loving kindness to the advancement of humankind. She always greeted her friends and love-ones with a loving smile and adorations of love. -Survivors include her children, Sarah (Ellis) Booker, Carolyn (Robert) Majors and Louise Hudson, all of Macon, GA, Charles Hill of Atlanta GA, Ida (Arthur) Boyd and Bonnie Hill of San Diego, CA; sisters, Mary Davis, Amy Engram, Iris Ford and Gloria Hill and one brother-in-law, Allen Hill, all of Macon, GA. She also has twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren. Mama Hill's life was working at her restaurant and never once mentioned retiring. She passed away quietly about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Medical Center of a brain aneurysm. She will be greatly missed.
