MRS. SMOOT LEAVES

News of the serious illness of Mrs. Chloe Smoot Cardon, daughter of Senator and Mrs. Reed Smoot, has elicited the profound sympathy of the entire colony here. Mrs. Cardon won many friends during her years in Washington and they earnestly hope for her speedy recovery.

The departure of Mrs. Smoot has cast a cloud over the spirits of all the Utahs in the capital. Mrs. Smoot takes an active part in social affairs and is relied upon for much initiative in local functions.

Senator Smoot and Congressman Howell of Utah have been invited to become delegates to the Angle-American exposition to be held in London this coming summer. They have been asked to appoint two other delegates. The commission will make an extended tour of central and southern Europe at the close of the exposition.

Senator Smoot is in receipt of a letter from Secy. Lane of the interior department in which the secretary sincerely congratulated him upon his bill providing for the codification of the mining laws. Mr. Lane expresses the hope that the bill will become law at the present session of Congress.

Senator Sutherland spent the week end at New York. On Saturday, he attended the complimentary luncheon given at the Metropolitan building for the purpose of discussion of "Workman's Compensation."
