Painter. A leading representative of Renaissance painting in Spain. His real name was Vicente Juan Macip Navarro, and he was also known as Juan de Juanes (in Castilian language). Joanes studied in Valencia along with his father, the painter Vicente Masip. He traveled to Rome in 1560 and was influenced by the masters of the Italian school, especially Raphael. Using Mannerist techniques, his paintings powerfully reflect the spirit of Catholicism in art; his scenes are often beatific, with figures representing calmness and spiritual peace. Joanes' work has been considered a model for ecclesiastical art for years. His best known canvases include "Tablas de la Quinta Angustia and La Natividad de la Virgen" for the Altarpiece of Fuente de la Higuera Church, "Portrait of Alfonso V El Magnánimo," "El Retablo de San Esteban," "La Santa Cena" and "La Asunción de la Virgen." He died in Bocairent, where he was buried. Two years later his remains were moved to the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz in Valencia, and when that church was demolished in 1850 he was reinterred at the Church of Santo Domingo.
