Roman Catholic Pope. Born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini, he was ordained in Brescia on May 29, 1920. Later he did advanced studies in Rome and entered the Vatican secretariat of state, in which he served for 32 years. Elected pope in June 1963, he continued the reforms of John XXIII. He reconvened the Second Vatican Council, and supervised implementations of many of its reforms, such as the vernacularization and reform of the liturgy. In 1964, he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and became the first pope in over 150 years to leave Italy. That was followed by trips to India in 1964, the United States in 1965, where he addressed the United Nations, Africa in 1969, and Southeast Asia in 1970. Paul VI was the last pope to be crowned; his successor Pope John Paul I abolished the ceremony during his service. He donated his own Papal Tiara to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. A few months before his death, he celebrated the solemn funeral of Aldo Moro (after his murder by the Red Brigades), who had sent him a famous letter from his prison. Moro and Montini had been together in the FUCI, a catholic association for university students, many years before, and in time had become perhaps the two most important catholic figures in Italy. Paul VI was beatified on October 19, 2014 by Pope Francis.
