William Tipton was born March 2, 1851, in Belmont County, Ohio, son of William John and Mary Jane Randall Tipton. On September 2, 1875, in Brown County, Indiana, he married Ruey Ann Freese, daughter of John and Nancy Jane McFarland Freese. They were the parents of 5 children: Laura Alice, Joseph Nelson, Nancy Elinor, Eva Iona and Ida Mae Tipton. William passed away March 26, 1928, in Olney, Richland County, Illinois, and was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Clay City, Clay County, Illinois.

In 1916 William wrote as complete a family history as he and his mother could remember. It has continued to be kept up to date by his descendants.
