It is our duty to notice the death of one of the early settlers of southern Illinois, Daniel B. Tuthill, esq., who died in this city this morning at one o'clock, at the residence of his son-in-law, Gen. R. N. Pearson. Mr. T. was a native of Vermont and settled in Jackson county, this state, early in in 1820. He was an accomplished classical scholar, and devoted the early part of his life to teaching. Subsequently he engaged in agricultural pursuits. His life was largely spent in promoting the welfare of others, very many of whom will remember him as a good and just man.
He reached the advanced age of eighty years, and died peacefully, having wrought faithfully and long in life. In his death another link in the chain that connects us with the early history of our state is severed. He found his religious home in the Episcopal Church, and under its rites the funeral will be held tomorrow at the residence of the son-in-law, Gen. R. N. Pearson. Il State Register, Springfield, IL 3-13-1875
Note: Daniel's wife Sally Strong Tuthill also has her name on the stone and a small foot marker. She was first buried in a cemetery in Jackson County, IL. Her son had her remains removed to Oak Ridge to be buried with her husband Daniel.
