Nathaniel was a volunteer on the Bon Homme Richard under the command of John Paul Jones. He participated in the famous Naval battle with the Serapis in 1779. Nathaniel would later die in the Bay of Biscay where he was buried. His headstone is a memorial. Nathaniel was John Paul Jones' best friend and at Jones' death gave Nathaniel the bronze medal awarded him by Congress for his actions against the Serapis.
Nathaniel Ingraham, was an officer on the "Bonhomme Richard' under Capt. Paul Jones. He was highly commended for courage and gained the affection of his commander and comrades. Congress presented Nathaniel Ingraham with a silver cup, which was made from the prize money of the Bonhomme Richard. He was also awarded one of the three handsome medal given by Congress to officers of that famous vessel.

Another volunteer aboard the Bon Homme Richard was Thomas Johnson who died on July 12, 1851. His memorial is 80534837. He was reported to have been one hundred years old at the time of his death. Another shipmate was Richard Dale memorial # 11323248 moved from Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia to Laurel Hill in 1888. Another veteran of that battle with the Serapis was John Mayrant memorial 116831682.
