Blick Wells, Three Rivers native, aeronautical engineer
1920 ~ 2003

Blick Wells, CA.1940
Three Rivers old-timer C. Blick Wells, 82, died Thursday, March 27, in Portland, Ore., of complications caused by a stroke. He had been residing there with his children since 2001.

On Aug. 24, 1920, Blick was born in Hammond (a settlement near the Sierra Drive and Mineral King Road junction) to Clement Thornton Wells and Phoebe Eleanor (Blick) Wells. His mother's second marriage was to Homer Monroe Hardin in 1925.

Homer worked in the maintenance department at Sequoia National Park, retiring in 1956 as superintendent of the department.

Phoebe was secretary to Col. John R. White, park superintendent, for several years. She and her mother, Linnie Blick, maintained the Hammond branch library from 1911 to 1924.

While growing up, Blick lived in Lindcove, Three Rivers, and Ash Mountain. During an illness, Blick lived for a year with his aunt and uncle, Clarence "Doc" and Liliane Wells at Big Oak Flat (south of present-day Lake Kaweah between the South Fork of the Kaweah River and Horse Creek).

Blick attended Sulphur Springs (on present-day Kaweah River Drive) and Three Rivers elementary schools. He graduated from Woodlake High School, where he was student body president during his senior year.

Blick was a seasonal ranger at Sequoia National Park for several years, working maintenance, trails, construction, firefighting, and dispatch. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spending much of his time in the service at the New Hebrides Islands as an aviation machinist's mate.

He married the former Ruth Pell of Chelan, Wash. Following the war, Blick attended California Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo on the G.I. bill and received an aeronautical engineering degree.

In 1950, he moved his family to San Diego to take a position with Convair (later General Dynamics Convair). During Blick's 30-year career in aerospace engineering, the family lived mostly in the San Diego area, but also spent time in Lancaster; LaLuz, N.M.; and Dayton, Ohio, before retiring in 1980.

Blick and Ruth had moved into a motor home in 1969, and they enjoyed extensive travel in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. They also spent several summers in Chelan, Wash., near their children and Ruth's family.

In 1998, Blick returned to his roots in the Three Rivers area, living with his son, Blick, in an apartment up the hill from the Pacific Bell building. He was active in the Three Rivers Historical Society and Hospice of Tulare County and attended the Community Presbyterian Church.

In 2001, due to medical reasons, he moved with his son to Portland, Ore., to live with his daughter and her husband.

Blick was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Pell Wells, in 1985, as well as his brother, David Hardin, and sister Linnie Lu (Hardin) Laird.
