Death of An Aged Lady - Mrs. Charity Van Norstran, whose illness was noted in the columns of the Register several days ago, died on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and was buried yesterday in Oak Ridge. Mrs. Van Norstran was born in the state of New Jersey, on the 2d of July, 1790, and was therefore in the 89th year of her age at the time of her death. She came to this city with her husband Clarkson F. Van Norstran, in 1836. He died during the year 1844. The surviving children are Mrs. Gilmore, of Fulton county; Mrs. Goodan, of Christian; Miss Ann and Peter V., of this city.

"Grandma," as she was familiarly called by those who were intimate with the family, was confined to her bed for two weeks previous to her death, and up to the time of her prostration was in the full possession of her mental faculties. Though much enfeebled in body by reason of her great age, she was cheerful and sunny in disposition, and had a kind word and a smile for all. The years of the evening of her life were passed in quietude; though her eyes had lost the lustre of youth, they were not so dim as to prevent her from searching the scriptures, and much of her time was passed in reading the Bible. As was fitting, her life closed peacefully; she passed away as if sinking into a tranquil slumber, and none who knew her will doubt that "after life's fitful fever she sleeps well." - Illinois State Register, Springfield, Il, 7-31-1878

Note: Charity and Sophia Van Norstrand are buried in unmarked graves in Block 9, plot 57. The area to the right of the small reddish stone and in front of the large tree is their plot.
