DEATH OF MRS M M Chambers
The community was inexpressibly shocked yesterday morning by the announcement that Mrs M M Chambers had died suddenly during the night. Mrs Chambers who has been living at the Mountain Hotel, was, during the absence of her sisters, Misses Adelaide and Laura Avery, occupying their cottage on Church street opposite Mrs. Colette’s, With her were her infant grandchild Mary Oertel and a colored servant. She had been apparently in her usual health on Tuesday, was on the streets in the evening and took her supper at the hotel as usual. She had always been a great reader, and on Tuesday night she was up until a late hour reading. About one o’clock yesterday morning she aroused the servant, telling her that she was in great pain and that she would die. The servant ran to call Mrs McConnaughey who lives in an adjoining lot, and a messenger was sent of the doctor, but by the time Mrs McConnaughey arrived Mrs Chambers was breathing her last and wen the doctor came she was dead. IT is supposed that death resulted from apoplexy. Mrs Chambers was about sixty years of age, and was a sister of Associate Justice A C Avery of the Supreme Court, of Mrs Justina Chambers of Statesville, and of Misses Laura and Adelaide Avery of Morganton. She leaves four children, two daughters and two sons, and an infant grandchild, the daughter of the late Mrs Hattie Oretel, which since its mother’s death about one year ago, has been her constant care and pleasure. Mrs Chambers will be sadly missed in Morgantown where for years she has been a ministering spirit to the sick in so many households. Her bereaved children and relatives have the sincerest sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. Her funeral will take place this morning at about ten o’clock.
