Born on Independence Day, July 4, in 1881, in Port Royal, Beaufort County, South Carolina, Miss Georgia Whitman Riley was one of six children of George M. D. Riley and Eliza Englert Miller Riley. She had two older half-sisters. Like her half sister, Miss Romana Riley (buried at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah), with whom she lived, she never married. She was engaged to a young English man who died during World War I. Georgia was one of the first women in business in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, working for the Central of Georgia Railroad (CGR). Her younger sister Frances also worked there as did her younger brother Harry. Georgia was responsible for getting Harry’s stepson, Joe Neely, his first full-time job at CGR. Georgia died at age 76 on March 27, 1958 in Savannah. She is buried in the Riley family plot in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah. Her ancestry was German and Irish. I hope one of her relatives will add her photo to this site.
