Appointed deputy sheriff before this county was cut off from Cherokee, and was elected the first sheriff of Clay County at its organization. He served as deputy and high sheriff for eleven years, and as county treasurer for four years. Also for several years he filled the office of treasurer of the Masonic fraternity. Brother Curtis professed religion and joined the Methodist Church whenquite a young man. He was recording steward of this, then the Fort Hembree circuit, for several years. Watson Curtis served as enrolling officer
