US Congressman. After serving the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he was admitted to the bar in 1870 and was district attorney for the first judicial district of Mississippi, 1875 to 1879. In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress and to the seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1901. He declined to be a candidate for reelection, resumed legal practice and was United States Commissioner to the St. Louis Exposition of 1904.
