J. A. Johnson Is Called by Death
Joseph A. Johnson, a pioneer resident of Appanoose County and a resident of Moravia since 1917, died Saturday evening at 9:45 at the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville following an extended illness over the last three years. He entered the hospital 12 days previous to his death but his suffering was beyond medical aid and death called him at the age of 80 years, two months and seven days.
Mr. Johnson was born November 9, 1851 at Indianapolis, Ind., and came to Iowa with his parents near Burlington where they first settled when he was seven years old. They later moved to Appanoose County and lived on a farm two miles east of Confidence where he grew to manhood. November 10, 1878 he married Medora Devore. In 1917 he retired and moved to Moravia where he has lived ever since. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was one of Appanoose County's earliest farmers and is well known and mourned by many residents of this county.
Services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Comley-Beckner funeral home with Rev. Childs officiating. Burial was made at the McDaniel's cemetery two and one-half miles east (sic) of Confidence. He was the last of his family and is survived only by two daughters, Mrs. Lester Ely, 624 North 7th street, Centerville and Mrs. Edna Hauk of Moravia. His son Francis Eugene preceded him in death 28 years ago.
