Johannes Vilhelm Jensen
Birth: Jan. 20, 1873
Nordjylland, Denmark
Death: Nov. 25, 1950
Syddanmark, Denmark

Nobel Prize-winning Author. He was born in the village of Farsų where his father was a veterinarian. In 1893 he began studying medicine at the Copenhagen University. Writing under a pseudonym he began a production of gory novels for a Copenhagen weekly in order to finance his studies. After the publication of his first serious novel in 1896 he abandoned the study of medicine and devoted himself to the literary activity. His production includes the novel "Kongens Fald" (1900-1901), which in the year 2000 was chosen the most important Danish novel of the 20th century, the novels with the common main title "Den Lange Rejse" (1908-1922), journalistic writings, and collections of Nordic myths. Of his lyric works the collection of poems from 1906 has had a great influence on the contemporary and later writings of poetry. In 1944 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.  (bio by: Erik Skytte)
