Native of Springfield and a schoolmate of Robert T. Lincoln when boys. In his teens, worked for E. B. Hawley & Co, dry good dealers. He enlisted in Capt. Wilson's 114th IL volunteers at the beginning of the Civil War. Lived in Springfield about 30 years. Employed as shipping clerk for Rice, Stix & Co., of St. Louis and lastly as clerk of the Railway Terminal association.

Son of John C. Sprigg, Springfield resident in the 1840s and secretary of the Springfield Marine & Fire insurance company. Survived by mother living in Omaha, Neb., sisters Mrs. William Coburn and Miss Belle Sprigg of Omaha, brothers Taylor Sprigg of Omaha and Fred Sprigg of Peoria. His wife died several years prior and also buried in Oak Ridge.
