She was the daughter of Edward Miller and Eliza Englert Miller Riley and the step-daughter of George M. D. Riley. She had one full sister and six younger half-siblings. Vallie was a school teacher who married school teacher and principal William Francis Gallaway, Sr., and they had two children, William Francis Gallaway, Jr. and Romagna Adeline Gallaway Mackie. Vallie died at age 61 on September 14, 1936 at the Central of Georgia Railroad Hospital in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia of pneumococcal meningitis following an ethmoidectomy surgery. She is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. Her ancestry was German. A collection of her letters is at the University of North Carolina library in Chapel Hill.
