Dr. Burt was born in Edgefield SC. the youngest son of Francis and Catherine Miles Burt. He practiced medicine in the Jacksonville/Talladega area of Alabama. He moved to Mississippi where he was appointed Auditor for the state. He was responsible for getting the Institute for the Deaf&Dumb passed through the legislature. It is still in existence today .He quit the Auditors position to join the Confederate Army-first as a Captain then voted by popular vote to Colonel of the 18th Mississippi Regiment. He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Balls Bluff near Leesburg,Va.on Oct 21 1861. He died some three days later in Leesburg. He left his wife Lucy Ann Morgan Burt and eight(possibly seven) children.

MWIA Balls,Bluff,died Oct 26,1861. Buried Greenwood Cemetery,Jackson,MS. His middle name is given as "Arthmala" by a descendent,and it is possible he used R as a phonetic initial for his unusal middle name.
