Mervyn died on 11th February 1944, on board Wellington Bomber X3215 from 21 Operational Training Unit, which took off from RAF Moreton-in-Marsh (Gloucestershire) on a non-operational bullseye exercise. An engine cut out on take off, and the aircraft crashed striking a large tree at Black Downs near Stretton-on-Fosse.
