Romagna Gallaway Mackie was born August 27, 1905 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia the daughter of William Francis Gallaway, Sr. and Valesci "Vallie" Adeline Miller Riley Gallaway. Romagna had one brother, William Francis Gallaway, Jr. Her ancestry was Scots and German.

She was the wife of Ernest Lloyd Mackie (1909-1975), a mathematics professor and dean at the University of North Carolina. They had two children, William Ernest Mackie and Anne Mackie Fitzgibbon. Romagna died at age 75 on September 17, 1980 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina. A collection of her letters is at the University of North Carolina library in Chapel Hill. Named for her mother's sister, famed educator Romana Riley, she was called "Little Romagna." I hope one of her descendants will add her photo to this site. Her husband is buried at the New Garden Friends Cemetery in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina near his parents.
