George Bates received a telegram yesterday morning, announcing the death of his brother, Albert Bates, aged 24 years, at the home of his parents, in Riverside, Ill., near to Chicago. His father is Gen. E. N. Bates, who was a former resident of Springfield, having been elected State treasurer in 1868. The death of Mr. Bates was very sudden and was caused by diphtheria. He was to have been married next Tuesday to Miss Cross, of Riverside.

The remains of Albert L. Bates, son of Gen. E. N. Bates, who died at Riverside Tuesday, arrived here at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and were taken from the train to Oak Ridge cemetery, where they were interred beside those of his mother and his brothers, Charles Frederick, Francis Newton and Willie, the latter an infant. The remains were met at the train by a number of friends of the family in carriages, who followed the hearse to the cemetery. The remains were accompanied from Chicago by Gen. and Mrs. E. N. Bates, Clarence Cross and Arthur Chambers, of Riverside, and Mrs. W. H. Officer and George A. Bates, of this city. Gen. and Mrs. Bates will remain here several days.
