Born in Scott County on November 16, 1916, he was the son of the late John Henry and Mendy Foster Thomas. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ziddie Smith Thomas in 1991; five brothers: Calvin, Willie, Charlie, Sylvester and Isaac Thomas; and three sisters: Elizabeth, Cordelia and Gleathie.
He was a member of the Black Oak Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and an active member of Oneida American Legion Post No. 136 where he served as a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of The Unicorn Fund, Inc. and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolene Acres of Crandall, Ga.; three sons: Jerry Thomas and Johnny Thomas, both of Oneida; and Randy Thomas of Wartburg; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one sister, Rilda Burke of Oneida; step-mother, Minnie Thomas Kidd of Coos Bay, Oregon; three brothers: Gabriel Thomas of Lenoir City; Aaron Thomas of Coos Bay, Oregon and Cleophia Thomas, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Many other relatives survive.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, February 16 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. C. Reynolds and the Rev. Charles Scroggins officiating. Special music was provided by Paul and Beverly Chitwood.
Burial followed in the Hazel Valley Cemetery with full military honors by Oneida American Legion Post No. 136. Serving as pallbearers was Noah Blevins, Paul Ray Watson, Lester Hill, Jesse Burke, Kenny Morrow, and Bobby Joe Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were E. M. Thomas, Leon Thomas, Tony Smith, and James Kirby Smith. Jones & Son Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
