President of Chile. He served as President of Chile twice, from 1927 to 1931 and 1952 to 1958. Born on a farm, he was given the opportunity to attend military school graduating on March 3, 1898. After entering the military as an officer, he attended the War College. He was a highly decorated officer. He was General Command of the Army Carabinieri Corps, which was a position he held between February 27, 1924 and April 21, 1927. After the coup d'état of 1925, he began his political career serving as Minister of War. During his terms as president, he founded the State Bank, the Housing Corporation (CORVI), legalized the Communist Party (PC), created the Air Force, the National Airline (LAN) and the General Comptroller of the Republic. His first Presidential term was considered a dictatorial, yet the second a more democratic period. The Great Depression of 1929 was catastrophic for Chile. In 1931, with students rioting in the streets and his cabinet abandoning him, he escaped Chile to Argentina in exile. While in exile, he was associated with members of the Nazi Party. Upon returning in 1937, he was a Presidential candidate in 1938 and 1942 before capturing the 1952 election. Besides being Minister of War, he was the Minister of the Interior, a Senator, and the Minister of War. Even after leaving office, he had a strong political voice in Chile.
