There are numerous conflicting tree reports of his ancestry, none yet holding up to verification.

It is not yet clear -- by DNA and non-tree fact records -- whether he is related to the William Craig who married Elizabeth Hupp (# 61683439) of Philip and Mary Buzzard Hupp. But because Elizabeth's sister Catherine Hupp married Andrew Kitts/Gatts and had a daughter Elysa who married this James Craig, DNA trails combine from the Hupp side, so can be challenging to distinguish on the Craig side alone.

The most common report, that he is the son of a James and Eleanor Fearis, is not feasible, given that other couple's other children -- especially IF James and William do turn out to be brothers, as the other couple's William had a different wife.

Other reports include being son of a James Craig to Knox County, Ohio, or a James Craig of Scotland to Beaver County, PA. Or, sharing an unnamed father with a different William Craig married to a different Elizabeth Hupp of Belmont County rather than Noble (# 126136755 and # 126136796 at Powhatan Point).

Few of his wife Elysa's siblings are yet linked in. The unlinked ones are:

* Mary Kitts/Gatts (1804-1880, married David Patterson Taylor of John & Martha. She is often conflated with other Mary Gattses.)

* Christian (1808-1898, Married Jane Patton Bell. Reportedly they are in Kitts Cemetery at 15 Creek, Washington County, but that location is not clear.)

* Philip (about 1811-aft 1880, buried either Mason or Cabell counties, WV)

* Unknown daughter who married Thomas Patton (few details known)

The descent of this James, however, is clear. Children in addition to those linked:

* George W. Craig: Born 1822, married Sarah __, had two sons and four daughters, including Sarah Craig Lawrence (# 107431829). Speculation: He might be the same as the one of similar name and date in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin Co. OH, but cemetery details are not sufficient to confirm.

* Eli: Born about 1831-aft. 1850, married Mary Ann Coon. Her parents are not yet known, so we do not know if they relate to Hannah Coon who married Eli's brother William. Hannah's parents were Conrad Coon of Joseph and Hunt, who married Nancy Coon of Philip and Scott. This Eli and Mary Ann are NOT the same couple as the Gallia/Fayette counties OH couple of similar names and ages. That other Eli married Mary Ann Barnett and is # 100739295 . This Eli has not been located in censuses after 1850.

* James Jr.: Born 1837. He is NOT the similar-sounding James at # 49921434, who married Sarah Jane Sheldon and was a priest in the Reorganized Latter-Day Saints church. That other James was the son of a Henry Craig, not this James Sr. It could, though, be possible that this James Sr. relates in some way to that father Henry, as all shared Smith Twp., Belmont County, Ohio connections.

* John H.: Born 1843. No data beyond the 1850 census.
