In 1980, he moved to Hardeman County, TN from Leland, MS to preach for the New Hope church of Christ near Middleton. In a newspaper interview he said: "I've preached from Norfolk, VA to Fairbanks, Alaska. I've preached in large city congregations and churches smaller than New Hope. But this is my place to be. There is a togetherness in the New Hope community and the church not to be found anywhere."
